A fish tank app for iPhone Duo
A virtual aquarium is a natural fit for a phone that opens like a book: a small glass closed, a wide tank open. Here is what to look for, and how our own app, Goldfold, approaches it. We make Goldfold, so weigh this accordingly.
What to look for
- It keeps going when you open the phone. Apple says unfolding is a resize, not a relaunch, so a tank should not reset when you open or close the phone.
- It uses the second screen for something. Open should be more than closed, bigger, not just stretched.
- Nothing important on the fold in the middle of the inner screen.
- It still works on any other iPhone.
How Goldfold does it
Closed, Goldfold is a glass of water that sloshes when you tilt the phone. Open the iPhone Duo and the water pours across the fold into an aquarium on both halves, with a goldfish you name and look after.
It also has ten small games, some of which use the fold, such as one where two people play at once, one on each half. It runs on every iPhone with iOS 18 or later, where it stays a glass.
Paid once, nothing else
Goldfold is a one-time purchase: no ads, no account and no in-app purchases, and the app itself has no analytics.
