iPhone Duo Split View: two apps side by side
Split View is new to the iPhone, and the iPhone Duo's inner screen is where it lives. Here is what Apple says it does, and what it means for the apps you use.
What Split View does on iPhone Duo
Apple describes Split View as a first for iPhone: two apps side by side on the inner display. You can also open two windows of the same app, such as two Safari windows, and swap apps quickly.
Apple also says you can save app pairs, so a combination you use often comes back in one step, and talk to Siri while you keep looking at the content on the other half.
What each app gets
According to Apple's developer guidance, the 50/50 split gives each app half of the inner display, and each app's toolbars and tab bars sit on its own outer edge. Apple tells developers all apps take part in multitasking, so every app has to work at half width.
Multiple windows of one app are possible on the inner display only.
What it means for the apps you use
An app that keeps its layout flexible simply resizes when you open the phone, close it or drop it into Split View. An app that was built for a fixed iPhone size can look cramped or letterboxed.
If an app feels wrong in half the screen, check its App Store page for the "optimized for iPhone Duo" badge, which developers earn when they submit screenshots for both screens.
